The case for owning the wash
Fleets that send vehicles out to a commercial wash pay per visit, wait in line, and lose control of the schedule. Once a fleet is large enough, the math usually favors a dedicated wash bay on site. The break-even point varies, but the operators who build one stop writing monthly checks to someone else and stop losing vehicles to missed washes.
What the equipment looks like
Trucks and buses need drive-through systems: rolling brushes plus high-pressure arches sized for the height and length of the vehicles. Buses in particular need side brushes that reach the full panel, and a gantry made for cars won’t do it. Spec the system to your tallest and longest vehicle, not the average.
Water is the real cost
A truck wash moves a lot of water, which is exactly why recycling pays here. A closed loop on a fleet bay cuts the water bill sharply and solves the discharge question at the same time. On a high-use fleet site the recycling unit often earns its place faster than on a retail wash.
The maintenance realities
- Corrosion. Road salt and cleaning chemistry are hard on frames and brushes. Stainless and corrosion-resistant fittings last longer in this duty.
- Winter. In cold climates the bay has to be heated and the loop winterized, or you’re repairing cracked lines in January.
- Brush wear. Big vehicles shed grit that loads the brushes; inspect and replace on a tighter schedule than a car wash.
Where it pays first
Municipal bus depots, logistics yards, and mining or agriculture fleets in remote areas get the fastest return, because every outsourced wash there costs more in time and distance. If your vehicles already queue for a wash off-site, that queue is your business case.
